The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, subsequently the Weston State Hospital, was built between 1858–1881. It operated until 1994, when it was closed down due to the treatment of patients. In 1990, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. However, this did not stop it from remaining abandoned for several years.

Paranormal phenomena have been reported at the Asylum for many years, as far back as when it was being used as a hospital. Reports of the apparitions of doctors, nurses and patients were made. Audible effects have included the cries of those in pain.

One particular ghost is supposed to be of a young girl named Lily or Lilly - just one of several children that are said to appear on the upper floors. However, with many cases involving such buildings, there is a high degree of ambiguity.

As the building was used during the Civil War, there have been reports of misty ghostly soldiers sighted in the area in which they were treated. Their agonising moans have also been reported.
